Seeking English-speaking actors to perform in Oscar Wilde’s final play, The Importance of Being Earnest for production in October 2027, directed by Billie Willett.
The play is about two men who each take on a false identity named Ernest to court two women whose lifelong dream has been to marry a man named Ernest. It is a fast-paced comedy about appearances, status and immoral life choices.
The director is British-Swedish theatremaker Billie Willett and the two roles of Algernon and Jack are already cast. Applications for these roles will be ignored.
Roles:
Gwendolen Fairfax:
A young, self-assured woman in need of an appropriately adoring husband to support her social status. Early to mid-20s, obsessed with her carefully curated image.
Cecily Cardew:
A daydreaming girl who lives in the country with very few opportunities to meet suitors, but longs for her imagined husband named Earnest. 18 years old and excessively pretty.
Lady Bracknell:
Gwendolen’s mother and Algernon’s aunt. A domineering force in the London social circuit, knows everyone’s business and can calculate the correct social move in any circumstance. Age 50-60
Miss Prism:
Cecily’s governess. A chaotic hypocrite dressed as a role model in Victorian propriety. Age 50-60
Rev. Canon Chasuble:
The rector of the local parish. Gentle and caring, with a genuine desire to serve his community. Oblivious to the chaos of others and how he is used as a prop in their plans. In love with Miss Prism.
Lane:
Algernon’s butler. Sarcastic, mocking the aristocracy. Only present in act one.
Merriman:
The butler at Jack’s country house. Formal and rigid, continuing Lane’s critique of the aristocracy in acts two and three.
Dates:
Auditions Monday 21 September 17-19:30 or 19:30-22 (some breaks, more details to come)
Rehearsals every Monday from 5th October 19-22 and some weekends closer to production
2027 production dates: tech rehearsal 26 September, dress rehearsal 30 September, performances 1-3 and 8-9 October.
